Good nutrition is a powerful part of healthcare. Whether you are recovering from illness or surgery, managing a chronic condition, preparing for surgery, or simply aiming to improve your health, the right nutrition support can make a meaningful difference.

At ParkCity Medical Centre, our Dietetic Services provide comprehensive therapeutic, preventive, and promotive nutrition care to help patients achieve better health outcomes, faster recovery, and improved quality of life.

Our registered dietitians combine scientific expertise with compassionate care, supporting patients and their families every step of the way. We believe that nutrition care goes beyond dietary advice — it is about empowering people to make sustainable changes that support their health and wellbeing.

A Registered Dietitian (RD) is a qualified healthcare professional trained in nutrition science, medical nutrition therapy, and patient counselling to support health and manage disease through nutrition.

Dietitians are specifically trained to:

*

Assess nutritional status and dietary habits

*

Identify nutrition-related health problems

*

Develop personalised nutrition care plans

*

Provide medical nutrition therapy for disease management

*

Support behavioural changes for sustainable lifestyle improvements

In Malaysia, dietitians are required to register under the Allied Health Professions Act 2016 (Act 774) in order to practise legally. This law was introduced to regulate allied health professions and to ensure that patients receive care from properly trained and competent professionals. Registration under the Act confirms that a dietitian has completed the required accredited education, professional training, and adheres to professional standards and ethical practice

This regulation helps protect the public from unqualified individuals who may provide inaccurate or unsafe nutrition advice, particularly for people with medical conditions where improper dietary management could affect health outcomes.

At ParkCity Medical Centre, all dietitians are registered with the Malaysian Allied Health Professions Council (MAHPC) under the Ministry of Health, providing patients with confidence that they are receiving nutrition care from qualified healthcare professionals.

Many people use the terms dietitian and nutritionist interchangeably, but they are not the same.

A Registered Dietitian:

*

Is trained in clinical nutrition and medical nutrition therapy

*

Works as part of a healthcare team in hospitals and medical settings

*

Is qualified to manage complex medical conditions through nutrition interventions

*

Must be registered with the Malaysian Allied Health Professions Council (MAHPC) under the Ministry of Health in order to practise

A nutritionist focuses on wellness, disease prevention, and general nutrition education, often working in community or commercial roles, but cannot treat clinical conditions. Currently they are also regulated under the Allied Health Professions Act in Malaysia and must be registered with the Malaysian Allied Health Professions Council (MAHPC) under the Ministry of Health in order to practise. Because dietitians are trained to assess medical conditions and develop specialised nutrition care plans, they are the most suitable professionals to provide nutrition therapy for patients with medical conditions, including those requiring specialised diets, nutrition support, or coordinated care with doctors.

Dietitians play an important role within the healthcare team to support patient care and recovery.

Many people can benefit from consulting a dietitian, especially when nutrition plays an important role in managing health.

You may benefit from seeing a dietitian if you:

  • Have diabetes, high cholesterol, or high blood pressure
  • Are managing kidney disease
  • Are preparing for or undergoing cancer treatment
  • Have digestive conditions such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) or food intolerances
  • Need support for weight management
  • Are preparing for or recovering from surgery
  • Have poor appetite, unintentional weight loss, or malnutrition risk
  • Need guidance on tube feeding or specialised nutrition support
  • Want professional advice to improve your overall nutrition, health and performance

Family members and caregivers are also encouraged to attend consultations, especially when supporting loved ones with complex medical conditions

Nutrition plays a critical role in both disease prevention and medical treatment. However, managing nutrition for health conditions often requires more than general dietary advice.

Registered dietitians are uniquely trained to apply medical nutrition therapy — the use of scientifically proven nutrition strategies to treat and manage medical conditions.

In a clinical setting, dietitians work closely with doctors and healthcare teams to ensure nutrition care is aligned with medical treatment. This is especially important for patients who require specialised nutrition management, such as those with diabetes, kidney disease, digestive disorders, cancer, malnutrition, or those recovering from surgery.

Consulting a registered dietitian ensures that your nutrition care is:

Initial Consultation

Your first consultation typically includes:

  • A comprehensive nutrition assessment (such as body composition analysis, hand grip strength and nutrition-focused physical examination)
  • Review of your medical history and current health condition
  • Discussion of your dietary habits, relationship with food, and lifestyle
  • Development of a personalised nutrition care plan

Your dietitian will work with you to set realistic goals and practical dietary strategies that support your health condition and personal circumstances.

Follow-Up Consultation

Follow-up sessions help to:

  • Monitor your progress
  • Adjust nutrition strategies when needed
  • Address new challenges or concerns
  • Provide continuous support and motivation

Nutrition care is often a step-by-step process, and regular follow-ups can help you achieve better health outcomes. Each session may take about 45-60 minutes.

To help the dietitian provide the most appropriate advice, patients are encouraged to bring:

*

Doctor’s referral letter, which summarises your health condition and reason for dietitian referral

*

Recent blood test results or medical reports

*

A list of current medications or supplements

*

A record of your typical food intake

*

Any specific questions or concerns you would like to discuss
